The Boogie of Writing

By Martin Atanasov

So you want to add some spice to your blog. Funny content is just what you need to achieve the razzle and dazzle you’re after. Being silly might sound childish and unprofessional, but just because your business is serious and straightforward, it doesn’t mean your blog should mirror that. On the contrary, your blog should be where your customers come to relax, have a breather, and have a glimpse of your personality. And just like in real life, the funnier the personality, the more charismatic and appealing it is.

Humor is a great tool to convert your customers into loyal fans. They will subscribe to your e-mail lists. They will visit your website organically, just to check if the next funny article is out. They will talk about you, share your posts and bring even more people to your website. Funny content, when done precisely, has the power to transform your website from an online store or a brand website to a social hub of like-minded people. Most importantly, these people will associate themselves with your brand.

That sounds awesome, and it is. But writing funnies is not as easy as it sounds. Funny content is a double-edged sword, and if you don’t use it carefully, you might chop off your head. There is a thin line between being a charming jokester and a despised bully. That’s why when writing funny content, you should already understand your audience inside and out and know how to poke fun at them so they won’t get insulted.

Placing boundaries in writing is a bit pointless since many variables may change the rules. This goes double for writing funny content where everything goes. However, if you are a beginner and still haven’t learned how to interact in written form with your customers properly, we suggest following these three rules, just in case.

Don’t be edgy

Being edgy is very cool, but more often than not, people who attempt to do it from the very get-go are perceived as assholes. Just like with anything else, you should start your journey of becoming funny and charming with more innocent jokes. Throwing swear words here and there will most probably alienate people, and they will find you disgusting, ruthless, and dumb. Yes, many people use swearing in their content with success. Still, they use it at the right time and on the right spot to emphasize a point or add a shock value, which is a delicate art. At first, better try more refined humor by using hyperboles or absurdity. It will show off your wit and won’t compromise your integrity.

Use similies

Using similies is the easiest way to transform an otherwise dull text into a hilarious article. Similies are crafted as quickly as a modern art masterpiece, which practically is a giant white square. Whole TV shows, like Family Guy, are based on similies. When using a simile, try to be as descriptive as possible to add to the comic effect. For example: “as uncomfortable as a dressed-up gazelle on a casual tiger-only reception.”

Poke fun at yourself

Every joke has a butt. Making your audience the butt of the joke and not offend them is very complex, and you do need some experience for that. That’s why, for starters, you might just want to poke some fun at yourself. Making jokes about yourself and your brand is quite popular and always brings you closer to the customer. Just make sure that the fun is good-natured and uses a lot of exaggeration.
